Former province and modern region of central
France; area 16,900 sq km/6,544 sq mi;
population (1986) 736,000. It consists of the
departements of Correze, Creuse, and
Haute-Vienne. Chief town is Limoges. A thinly
populated and largely unfertile region, it is
crossed by the mountains of the Massif
Central. Fruit and vegetables are produced in
the more fertile lowlands. Kaolin is mined.
